Dinachara – the Ayurvedic science of optimal living
In Ayurvedic medicine, Dinachara is a specific therapeutic arm that focuses on how we can tap into the natural rhythms of the body, (ui.e. the circadian rhythm) to optimise health, energy and well-being.
Interestingly, this is an approach to optimal living that is being increasingly validated by Western science and medicine. For example, Ayurveda has very structured guidelines on when we should eat our three meals of the day, based on the fact that at these times, we have more digestive capacity which in turn allows us to more effectively digest the food we eat and assimilate the nutrients around the body. Likewise, Western science now tells us that at these same times of the day, we have an optimal amount of hydrochloric acid, pepsin and other digestive enzymes which maximises the nutritional benefit we obtain from what we eat.
Another vital area of Dinachara in the Ayurvedic tradition is that of self-Abhyanga or self-massage. In this tradition, Ayurveda stresses the importance of spending a few minutes every morning applying warm medicated oil onto the whole body in the form of a gentle self-massage. This increases circulation, removes toxins, mobilises fat cells, reduces stress and boosts immune function. Again, this concept has been unequivocally proved by the Western research which shows that if we can spend 3-minutes a day, ideally after we shower, performing a gentle self-massage, we experience reductions in blood pressure, reduced levels of stress hormones, higher immune function and optimised levels of energy and vitality. These are just a few examples. Below is a structured outline of an optimal Dinachara, the like of which you would adhere to if you went to a residential Ayurvedic retreat. In our busy lives, it is not always possible to follow this routine completely but the closer we get to doing so, the more empowered, positive, vital and healthy we feel.
In our clinical work, we are always astounded at how radically different people begin to look and feel after adopting these concepts into their daily lives and in terms of collective health promoting gains for minimal effort and cost, in our opinion there is nothing more powerful than this.
Therefore have a look at the structure below, modify it in keeping with your lifestyle and routine (for example, performing the self-massage and meditation in the evening if you do not have time in the morning) and then commit to adhering to this for 3-4 weeks. I promise you will notice the benefits! Enjoy.
